At Alliance Vancouver, we take pride in delivering the highest level of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu instruction in a family-friendly environment. Our Head Instructors, Thomas Lisboa (Adults) and Walter Buse (Kids), both trained under and received their black belts from Alliance founder and multi-time world champion Fabio Gurgel. Thomas and Walter are certified in the Alliance methodology and are accomplished international competitors. Today, their sole focus is on passing their knowledge onto their students and leading them towards a deeper understanding of the art.
We believe that anyone can benefit from Jiu-Jitsu, so long as they’re presented with a structured curriculum and a safe environment. We welcome people from all walks of life, no matter what age, fitness level, creed or other. Whether you are looking to place your 3-year-old into his or her very first martial arts class, trying martial arts yourself for the first time or looking to take your competitive career to the next level, we have something designed specifically for you.
Joe was born and raised in Vancouver and started training BJJ at the age of 47. After training alongside Walter for several years under Marc Marins of North Vancouver BJJ, Joe visited Walter in Sao Paulo Brazil where they trained together at Alliance Headquarters. Impressed with what he saw in Sao Paulo, Joe knew he wanted to recreate the same experience in Vancouver. Teaming up with Walter they set about building the first Alliance team in British Columbia. 7 years later Joe is proud to have fulfilled this ambition.
Walter Buse grew up in Vancouver and for a long time has been passionate about making a positive impact through jiu-jitsu. Walter first stepped in the mats at 13 years old as a competitor in the sport of freestyle wrestling and later transitioned into BJJ. After graduating from high school at Point Grey Secondary and completing a bachelor of commerce at UBC’s Sauder School of Business, Walter moved to Sao Paulo Brazil where he earned his black belt in BJJ from Alliance founder Fabio Gurgel. In May of 2013 upon returning from Brazil, together with his friend Joe, Walter opened the doors and started teaching. He lives in Vancouver with his wife and son and teaches jiu-jitsu at our school from Monday to Friday. Walter is proud to be involved with teaching fitness and self-defence in his community.
